چکیده

It has been known for more than 30 years that star formation in giant molecular clouds (GMCs) is slow, in the sense that only ∼ 1% of the gas forms stars every free-fall time. This result is entirely independent of any particular model of molecular cloud lifetime or evolution. Here we survey observational data on higher density objects in the interstellar medium, including infrared dark clouds and dense molecular clumps, to determine if these objects form stars slowly like GMCs, or rapidly, converting a significant fraction of their mass into stars in one free-fall time. We find no evidence for a transition from slow to rapid star formation in structures covering three orders of magnitude in density. This has important implications for models of star formation, since competing models make differing predictions for the characteristic density at which star formation should transition from slow to rapid. The data are inconsistent with models that predict that star clusters form rapidly and in free-fall collapse. Magneticand turbulence-regulated star formation models can reproduce the observations qualitatively, and the turbulence-regulated star formation model of Krumholz & McKee quantitatively reproduces the infrared-HCN luminosity correlation recently reported by Gao & Solomon. Slow star formation also implies that the process of star cluster formation cannot be one of global collapse, but must instead proceed over many free-fall times. This suggests that turbulence in star-forming clumps must be driven, and that the competitive accretion mechanism does not operate in typical cluster-forming molecular clumps. The Star Formation Rate and Dense Molecular Gas in Galaxies

HCN luminosity is a tracer of dense molecular gas, n(H2) > ∼3 × 10 cm, associated with star-forming giant molecular cloud (GMC) cores. We present the results and analysis of our survey of HCN emission from 65 infrared galaxies including 9 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs, LIR > ∼10 L⊙), 22 luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs, 10 L⊙ < LIR < ∼10 L⊙) and 34 normal spiral galaxies with lower IR ...

Astronomy and Astrophysics Environmental Effects in Galaxies Molecular Gas, Star Formation, and Activity

In order to study whether there is any correlation between nuclear activities, gas content, and the environment where galaxies reside, we have obtained optical and millimetric spectra for a well-defined sample of intermediate Hubble type spirals in dense environments and in the field. We found that these spirals in dense environments have on average: less molecular gas per blue luminosity, high...

Modeling a high mass turn down in the stellar initial mass function

Statistical sampling from the stellar initial mass function (IMF) for all star-forming regions in the Galaxy would lead to the prediction of ∼ 1000 M⊙ stars unless there is a rapid turn-down in the IMF beyond several hundred solar masses. Such a turndown is not necessary for dense clusters because the number of stars sampled is always too small. Although no upper mass limits to star formation h...

Dense Molecular Gas: A Sensitive Probe of Stellar Feedback Models

We show that the mass fraction of giant molecular cloud (GMC) gas (n 100 cm−3) in dense (n 104 cm−3) star-forming clumps, observable in dense molecular tracers (LHCN/LCO(1–0)), is a sensitive probe of the strength and mechanism(s) of stellar feedback, as well as the star formation efficiencies in the most dense gas. Using high-resolution galaxy-scale simulations with pc-scale resolution and exp...

Placing stars within cosmological simulations

I investigate the process of converting gas into stars within the framework of a standard cosmological model. By examining the set of objects grown in a combined N-body plus smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation with those obtained in similar models where some of the cold, dense gas was replaced by collisionless “star” particles I show that it is possible to make this substitution without ...
